If I had to guess, I'm thinking this is Manny's ego at work, but not much else.  He knows it is expected of him to do something off-beat...so he is.  Anything to keep the "Manny being Manny" stories going.

I'd be very surprised if this was some power play by Manny.  If he doesn't show up for Spring Training, he doesn't get paid...knowing he wants to be traded, the Red Sox have no reason to go along with his showing up late unless they really think it isn't that big a deal.

Having written all that...anything could and usually does happen with Manny, so who the hell knows?
