127 0 All The Olde English Ds Game 33: Detroit Tigers 6 Baltimore Orioles 7 5/12/06, 10:46am Pitching and defense, the keys to winning baseball, both eluded the Tigers on Tuesday. For the second time in three games the bullpen blew a victory for the starting pitcher. This time it was Fernando Rodney letting down Nate Robertson. Carlos Guillen giveth and Carlos Guillen taketh away. For the third time on the young season Guillen had his third two error game, which is out of character for the normally solid defensive shortstop. Guillen doubled in three runs, but his errors lead directly to three unearned runs including the game winner. Each error occurred with two out in the inning and the Tigers would have escaped without further damage has the plays been made. Detroit led 5-2 after the top of the fifth, but could not finish off the victory. This is now the Tigers third straight loss and they have dropped four out of the last five. The Tigers pitchers were burned by the ling ball. Nate Robertson started and gave up two bombs, one to Tejada and one to Jeff Conine. Robertson was not as sharp as he had been in previous starts, but he battled through 5.1 innings and left with a chance for his fourth victory on the year. He gave up 4 runs, however only 2 were earned and he also walked five batters. Jason Grilli recorded the final two outs of the sixth for his second hold as Detroit held a 5-4 lead. Rodney took over in the seventh as Leyland chose to give Zumaya a day of rest. Rodney gave up his first runs of the year after not being scored upon in 13 innings. Leading 6-4 he gave up solo home runs to Mora and Gibbons tying the ball game. Rodney worked his second inning of the night in the 8th and took his first loss on the year. Guillen’s error with two outs would have ended the inning with a tie game. Unfortunately for Guillen and the Tigers Mora followed by singling in the winning run. Guillen broke open a 2-2 game with his bases clearing doubled that opened up the 5-2 lead. Other good offensive performances belonged to Omar Infante who had a couple hits and 2 RBI. Magglio Ordonez went yard again for the fourth straight game. He now has 10 on the year with 24 RBI and is hitting .309. The offense has put up runs the last few games, but the pitching has not allowed the Tigers to win the last few games. It will be interesting to see how the Tigers respond to this adversity. Justin Verlander gets a shot to end the losing streak Wednesday. *** OEs 3 Stars of the Game *** #3 Nate Robertson – 5.1 IP, 6 Hs, 4 Rs, 2 ERs, 5 BBs, 1 K, 2 HRs, 3.27 ERA #2 Magglio Ordonez – HR for the 4th consecutive game with 2 runs scored #1 Carlos Guillen – 2-2 with a run scored, 3 BBs and 3 RBI &img-http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/images/2006/05/09/OINiIvkp.jpg-img& On Tap – Game 34 (20-13) @ Baltimore Orioles (15-19) May 10th, 7:05 ET Justin Verlander (3-3, 3.68) v.
