Detroit has hit more home runs than any other team going into the weekend games. Their pitchers also have the lowest combined ERA in all of baseball. The final stat is the one that surprised me the most. I knew Detroit was hitting a ton of HRs and the pitching has been incredible, but it is the defense that surprised me. Carlos Guillen has 9 errors on the year including three multiple error games. Also Brandon Inge has six errors over at the hot corner. I have harped on the defense the last week or so and apparently rather unfairly. According to Baseball Prospectus the Tigers have the best defensive efficiency in baseball turning almost 74% of balls in play into outs. I knew they were playing improved defense this year as a team, but I had no idea how well. I think I'll cut Guillen some slack. I think pitching plays a key role in this defensive statistic, but pitching, defense and power hitting definitely adds up to victories. [The Olde English Ds from Whitmore Lake/MI] Replies:
