Detroit fell behind by a large margin very early in the game. KC pounded starter Mike Maroth, who only pitched a third of an inning, for six runs on three home runs. Roman Colon came on for the long relief role and gave Detroit a lift. Colon went 5.1 innings allowing only 2 additional runs on five hits. He walked three and struck out three. Detroit started the come back in the second with three runs to halve the lead with the help of an error and a hit batter. They crept to within a run in the fourth on a two run homer by Marcus Thames. KC extended the lead to 8-5 before the Tigers came all the way back to tie the game in the eighth. Polanco singled in a run and Pudge Rodriguez doubled in two for Detroit. The Tigers exploded with some power in the ninth. Home runs by Monroe, Thames and Pudge did the damage. Following solo shots by Monroe and Thames the Ivan Rodriguez homer was a three run shot. There was little drama left for the bottom of the ninth. Joel Zumaya pitched the final 1.2 innings for his third victory on the year. Detroit also received quality relief efforts from Jason Grilli and Bobby Seay. Zumaya clocked a 101 mph fastball in the eighth as he struck out Reggie Sanderson. He had 3 Ks and now has a 3.22 ERA for the season. *** OEs 3 Stars of the Game *** #3 Craig Monroe – 4-4 with 4 runs scored, 1 BB and 1 RBI #2 Marcus Thames – 2-4 with 3 runs scored, 1 BB, 2 HRs, and 3 RBI #1 Ivan Rodriguez – 2-4 with a run scored, 2 BBs, a HR and 5 RBI &img-http://images.sportsline.com/u/photos/baseball/mlb/img9461550.jpg-img& On Tap – Game 48 (33-14) v.
