Todd Jones is not pitching very well lately. He gave up four runs to the lowly Rays in the 12th inning to blow a great pitching performance by Jeremy Bonderman. The Tiger starter struck out 12 batters and only allowed a single run in eight innings of work. Bonderman got his 500th strike out of his career and is only the third Tiger to do so before his 25th birthday. The other guys were Denny McLain and Hal Newhouser, pretty good company. The lone run off Bonderman came on a RBI single by Lugo in the fifth. Detroit’s offense did not do much to support Bonderman. Marcus Thames pushed the game to extra innings with a RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. Joel Zumaya continues to pitch well adding another two scoreless innings. He struck out five of the six outs and now has a miniscule 2.12 ERA. Jones does seem to have enough gas in the tank at his age to go two innings. He made it through the 11th before getting rocked in the 12th. With bases loaded and two outs he gave up a bases clearing double to Jorge Cantu. He gave up another run on a double for good measure. With his recent struggles Jones is now 1-5 with a 7.27 ERA. Hopefully Jones will turn things around quickly or the Tigers will eventually have to look elsewhere in the pen for a closer. *** OEs 3 Stars of the Game *** #3 Marcus Thames – 2-5 with a RBI #2 Joel Zumaya – 2 IP, 0 Hs, 0 Rs, 1 BB, 5 Ks, 2.12 ERA #1 Jeremy Bonderman – 8 IP, 6 Hs, 1 Rs, 1 BB, 12 Ks, 4.01 ERA On Tap – Game 67 (42-24) v.
