... Most of Ryno's observations are good. The Mets and Dodgers are certainly the big winners for the past week. The Mets have a slighter edge with the signings of Delgado and LoDuca. However, I have a few disagreements. I don't see how the Padres are a big winner with re-signings of Hoffman and Roberts this week. Hoffman's best years are behind him and Dave Roberts is a bit overrated, IMHO. Sure, he steals a lot of bases, but his batting average and on-base percentage are usually quite low for a leadoff man. I don't think the Braves lost at all. True, they lost Furcal, but they gained Renteria to fill the SS spot and they still have a few guys who are capable of leading off. Unlike Ryno, I also believe that the Nats will benefit from signing Alfonso Soriano. I know there's griping from Soriano about not wanting to play outfield, but they'll work it out. He's a solid talent who will help bring a winning team in the nations capital.

Leo Mazzone did a lot more for Atlanta other than chewing gum, rocking back and forth, and scratching his **** most of the game. He's an encyclopedia on the pitching aspects of baseball and I don't think there's ever been a better coach for pitchers. Mazzone's loss should have quite an impact this season. Also, Philly's loss of two star players, such as Jim Thome and Billy Wagner will not get them very far, plus their issues with Bobby Abreu haven't been resolved yet. The Mets should be the favorite to win the N.L. East for obvious reasons. It seems like the Mets have been doing the most in improving their team this offseason with acquisitions of Carlos Delgado, Billy Wagner, Paul LoDuca, and a few others.

He is every bit the talent that Griffy is and may even be better. However, his attitude was piss poor towards the media, which admit it or not folks, players need the media for a number of reasons. Early on, Barry's main problem is that he played for Pittsburg, and aside from one playoff series with the Braves, they never reached their potential. The "Killer B's" was a failed marketing attempt when it came to competeing with the "Bash Brothers"or "Bo Knows" mania. That is why he didn't get the attention. I still enjoy watching Barry play baseaball. He looks better than I thought he would this spring. I just hope Griffy can have another year like he did last year. How good would that be for baseball?

It's certainly true that money doesn't always guarantee success in the season and postseason (Yankees, Braves prior to last year), but the baseball world---particularly the fans---have suffered as a consequence of the big increase in prices for memorabilia, tickets, and even parking at the stadium. The main reason why the A's and Twins keep winning is because they have outstanding GM's, Billy Beane and Terry Ryan, who have a keen eye on young talent. Overall, small market teams in K.C., Pittsburgh, and St. Petersburg still have trouble competing with others in the continuously stratospheric salary game, so I'm still for a salary cap in order to make it a more even playing field, which would benefit the pocketbooks of the average fans. The NFL and NBA have been successful at this for the most part.

...I agree. I think he is certainly a hall of famer. I think the player who is unfortunately going to get screwed out of the Hall of Fame is Fred McGriff. Why? He stayed clean. He was a pro. He was a class act. His numbers are very comparable among a lot of baseball greats already in the Hall of Fame. Why does 500 Homeruns have to be the standard now, or so it seems? If so, why are guys like Ryan Sandberg, Wade Boggs, Ozzie Smith, & Pee Wee Reese in the hall of fame. I know I have bitched about this before. Maybe I love McGriff a little too much, but in my eyes, he has hall of fame type numbers & he almost single handedly, atleast offensively, won the Atlanta Braves their only World Series.

...The Mets got to Jorge Sosa early and sent him to a 5th inning exit. Carlos Delgado and Xavier Nady continued their offensive attack, and on a night when David Wright and Jose Reyes were quiet, Pedro had enough backing to shut down the Braves for his 200th career win. Delgado hit a 2 run shot, Nady a solo shot and La Duca had a couple singles to provide the offense that was needed for the win. Wagner came in and shut the door in the ninth and the Mets are now 10-2,and hold a 5 game lead over Atlanta, which is a great start. Beltran was out tonight, and Cliff Floyd left in the bottom of the forth with a straind rib cage. No update was available on him after the game, not sure how he hurt it, he turned on a inside pitch which he ripped down the line for a double, and looked fine, but then looked gimpy rounding third on a Nady single which he scored on, and was out after that. He was replace by Jose Valentin, yes Jose Valentin, 119 year old Valentin. Victor Diaz was sent to Triple A Norfolk this afternoon, and reliever Pedro Feliciano was recalled, crazy timing if Floyd is out, but Victor needs at bats, and sitting on the bench in Shea wasn't ideal.

...It was basically a tee box Tuesday night when Victor Zambrano took the mound. Braves, most notably Andrew Jones, used Drivers, 3 Woods, and even Sand Wedges, any club in their bag, against the former Devil Ray. ...I know this is a crazy, shooting from the hip accusation, but John Schuerholz just recently traded Wilsom Betemit. In my opinion, he was the best young hitting talent they had in their organization. He should have been set to take over for Chipper Jones. Schuerholz has also shopped around Andruw Jones. I know he is set to make a bunch of money next season, but Andruw is worth it & he is like having a damn good relief pitcher because he'll save you a run a game just by his defense. We all know his bat is pretty good to. Schuerholz also just traded Jorge Sosa, the only black pitcher they had. In the past Schuerholz has traded guys like Fred McGriff, when he was still in his prime, Jermaine Dye, Gary Matthews Jr., Dieon Sanders when he was in his prime, Ron Gant(in his prime). These are just to name a few. Imagine if the Braves had kept either Dye or Matthews Jr. I don't wan't to hear about economics. You never hear about the Braves wanting to trade Chipper Jones. He makes a lot of money also. Chipper, in my opinion should be traded before Andruw. Chipper has stayed on the DL a lot more lately. Andruw is rarely on the DL. Everytime it seems I start liking one of the Braves players, Schuerholz trades them. A lot of those players were just coincidently black or hispanic, or dominican. The Atlanta Braves in my opinion have become the "good ole white boy" organization. Quiet frankly, trading Betemit was & will prove to be the absolute dumbest thing John Schuerholz has ever done, next to trading Matthews Jr. & Jermaine Dye, who the Braves & Schuerholz gave up on far too early in their careers. I hope Betemit truly comes back to haunt Schuerholz & the Braves one day in a very big way just to shove it up John Schuerholz racist ass!

...The most important news of this series was that prior to Chipper Jones getting hurt we said that Chipper could be a HOF barring injury. However, it looks like the injury bug has caught Larry again has his right quad muscle is starting to bother him. AT this point the Braves injury report reads like a memorial; Gonzalez, Soriano, Moylan, Chipper, Hampton, Glavine. The trainers and doctors are making their money this year.

...John Smoltz added another milestone to his illustrious career has an Atlanta Brave pitcher. Whether getting the call in the 9th inning or being penciled every 5th day, Smoltz has been a flat-out gamer and one of my favorite Braves of all-time. After recording his 3,000 K of his career it got me wondering where should Smoltz rank among all-time Brave pitchers. From Maddux, to Niekro, to Glavine, to Spahn, one has to wonder where would Smoltz fall under. To me it is simple. He is the &b-BEST-b& pitcher in Braves history. Name another pitcher who was a starter, converted to closer, then to starter and was damn good in all positions. No pitcher ever has made the transition smoother. He is the all-time leader in saves in franchise history with 154, the all-time leader in K's, and is the best post-season pitcher. Maddux may have the hardware to show and Spahn is the all-time franchise leaders in wins, but none of them can boast a post-season resume like Smoltz can. 15-4 with a 2.65 ERA and 194 K. The 8 time all-star is also the only pitcher to win a Cy Young and a Rolaids Relief Man of the Year award. In thos years where he took hardware he was untouchable. In his Cy Young year he went &b-24-1-b& and his Rolaids Relief Man of the year he converted &u-55 out of 56 save opportunities-u&. Just think if Smoltz would have not been in an Atlanta uniform during those post-season runs. The Atlanta Braves would have not won the World Series and they would definitely be the Buffalo Bills of Major League Baseball.

Without even going to baseball reference to support my position with even more stats that would make your stance look silly, I'll just throw these at you. Spahn won 363 games and didn't appear in a major league game until he was 25. He won 20 THIRTEEN times! Yes, Smoltz has been a great postseason pitcher but don't forget, he's had many more playoff rounds and has played on better team. Would you rather have Bernie Williams or Mickey Mantle in your playoff lineup? Williams has the record for HR but Mickey only played World Series games. The fact that Spahn was able to win so many games playing for teams that were not as successful as Smoltz's makes him even more impressive. By the way, Smoltz NEVER went 24-1 in any season. You say Spahn is the second best in Braves' history? I say he's the third best in Major League history and certainly the best lefty ever. When you reach legal drinking age you might agree with me.

268. Season Rollercoaster Going Up
...Well, the Cubs have now won five in a row and things are looking pretty good -- for now. As fans of this team know, several times this year have the Cubs started to play well, appearing that a major move in the standings is imminent... only to immediately turn around and fall flat on their faces again. But if they continue to get the starting pitching like they have in these first two games of the second half against the Pirates, the Cubs should win a lot more consistently. What's really puzzling is how the Nationals and Braves dominated Cubs hitters, then since facing Dontrelle Willis they have pounded the ball the last five games. Like I said, this has been going on all year, but hopefully with this lineup of Jerry Hairston and Todd Walker at the top, along with some great pitching, more consistent winning is in the near future.

270. Relief Pitchers
...A lot of how the pen shakes out depends on the battle for the #5 spot in the starting rotation. However, it can be assumed that Verlander will get the nod. This opens the possibility of moving Roman Colon, a 26 year old right hander to the bullpen. Colon was obtained from the Braves last year for Kyle Farnsworth. Colon has a strong arm and good stuff, but has struggled out of the bullpen throughout his career. Last season he was 2-6 with a 5.58 ERA. For whatever reason he has posted much better numbers when pitching as a starter. It would not be shocking if the Tiger’s dealt Maroth, who has been speculated as trade bait for the last three years, and give Colon a starting spot at some point in the season. Another option would be to move either Maroth or Robertson to the bullpen, solving the left handed reliever problem and move Colon into the rotation. However, I am just a lowly blogger and don’t have the pull to make any of that happen.

...Everyone knows the Brewers started out 5-0 this season. They finished their first home series (and season) 5-1. They then went on the road against St. Louis, NYM, and Houston. They finished that road trip with a record of 3-6 (8-7 for the season). The Brewers returned home and immediately lost 3 of 4 to Cincinatti before sweeping the Braves and bringing their record on the homestand to 4-3 and season record to 12-10 overall. Now the brewers will have an off day then journey to Chicago for a three game roadtrip to finish out the month needing only one win in the 3 game series to finish the month of April with a winning record. This is a pretty big series for the Brewers considering this could be the last time this season they face the hapless Cubs current staff and they get back to Prior, Wood, Zambrano, and Maddux. In a four game series vs. those guys, the Brewers could strike out over 50 times.

...David Wright hit 2 homers and had 3RBI's, and Pedro shut the Braves down for 7 innings, a Chipper Jones 2 run homer his only blemish, as the Mets beat the Braves 5-2. Pedro struck out 5 and allowed 4 hits. The offense churned out 11 hits, led by Reyes, Lo Duca, Wright and Kaz who all had 2 each. Duaner Sanchez pitched the 8th and Wagner the 9th for the save and Pedro's 5th win to start him 5-0 for the season.

278. Mets Take 2 Out Of 3, Head Home
...The Mets completed their 3 game series with the Braves Sunday with a loss, 8-5 as Jeff Francoeur had a big day going 4 for 5 with 5 RBI's. Steve Trachsel just didn't have it today, and was everywhere with his command. Beltran played again today and had to turn the wheels on a couple of times today and looked good doing so, as he also looked good on his 2 run homer swing.

...I share your pain with losing. One of my 2 favorite teams is the Devil Rays. They are in Tampa-St.Pete. I have also been a Braves fan since I was a kid. I just decided to like the D Rays when they came into existence since thet are a Florida team. I live in Florida(Panama City Beach). I don't get to too many major league games. I try to go watch the Braves & Devil Rays a couple of times a year. They actually play each other in interleague play this year in St.Pete. I'm definately going to the Trop to see that, probably for 2 or 3 games in late June.

296. Luck, Pitching, and Jason Giambi
...Josh Towers is pitching as I speak. He is back from AAA, and he is pitching well against the Braves. The fact that he did not give up 5 runs in the first two innings was the best news I’ve heard all year. At this point, he’s pitched 5 innings, given up 3 hits, 1 BB, and 1 ER. He’s worked in and out of trouble, and looked solid. This is great; the Jays desperately, desperately need pitching, after losing Gustavo Chacin for six weeks. I will make no assumptions about Towers’ future, but he pitched well in AAA, and a return to last year’s form is plausible.
