New York made the decision after Pavano mentioned the back issue last week, then was sent to examined by back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins, who recommended a 10-to-14 day exercise program. The setback raises the possibility Pavano might not be ready for the start of the regular season on April 3.

If Pavano can't pitch this year the Yankees are out around 10 Million. Won't even bother them, but that would badly hurt almost any other team in baseball, and cripple some. Signing Pavano was always a bad move. The guy had a career year in a pitcher's park in the best pitching division in baseball and the Yankees gave him a ridiculous contract off one year's work. And he's a low strikeout right-handed pitcher in Yankee Stadium. Dumb move, but the Yankees can get away with lots of dumb moves because they generate far more revenue than any other team in baseball.
