This is proof that the modern-day player is more likely to look out for number one, rather than the team. Even on a below average team, players were juicing up in order to gain the attention of a contending team and get signed to a big money contract. Looking back, it's interesting to think about people saying during the late '90's how the balls were juiced. At the time, most of us were blindsided and should've looked at players biceps instead.

I disagree completely, Jaydawg.

The reason for this aberration is watered down pitching and overexpansion. There are 40+ pitchers in the Majors who, in the 60's would have never made it to the big leagues.

Take a look at the last place teams. Look at Tampa Bay, in particular. Amazing offense. No pitching. It is because of their pitching that they go nowhere.

Steroids have been in the game since at least the early 1980's. Remember Brian Downing and Larry Herndon? Writers used to gush over how their "lifting weights" made them better ballplayers. They looked different from the vast majority of players during their era, but today they would fit right in with the majority of players today. The use of steroids exploded from the early 1990's on, when not just a few players used them, but probably the majority did.

It's actually a combination of BOTH steroids and watered down pitching.
