Today is a great sports day for Detroit. Two playoff games with the Redwings in a pivotal game five verse the Oilers and the Pistons going for a 3-0 lead verse the Bucks. The Super Bowl for the Lions…the NFL Draft started at noon and the Lions fans were booing the pick by 2. Let’s not forget the Detroit Tigers and Justin Verlander who are generating some positive buzz around town. Once again they teed off on Minnesota’s pitching, which is much worse than I figured them to be in April. Ouch!!!

Break out the power stick Carlos Guillen!!! He blasted a 3-run homer in the bottom of the first off Carlos Silva following opposite field singles by Polanco and Pudge. For the second straight game Guillen gets a 3 RBI hit early in the game. The Tigers brought out the big stick again with two outs in the second. Granderson hit his fourth of the year with Monroe on second. Guillen went yard again in the third with Maggs aboard for his fifth RBI in two ABs. As if that wasn’t enough Chris Shelton double and scored the eighth run on a single by Alexis Gomez. For the second straight game the Twins starting pitcher was not able to get out of the third inning.

The pen was not able to stop the bleeding as Granderson doubled in Gomez for the ninth run. Magglio Ordonez joined in the power explosion with a homer in the fourth. Guillen kept up the hot hitting following with a double. Monroe doubled in Guillen for the eleventh run. Detroit continued to poor on the offense. All this coming after getting shut out twice by the Angels. The Tigers added four more in the six, two in the seventh and on in the eighth. All told Detroit scored 18 runs on 23 hits.

The great pitching is in danger of being lost in this offensive explosion. Detroit has scored 27 runs in the last two games, but only need three total to win both games. Justin Verlander went seven easy innings only giving up one run on six hits. He walked two and struck out four on 103 pitches. Verlander won his third decision of the year and lowered his ERA to 3.52. Bobby Seay and Jason Grilli each pitched in with a scoreless inning. Hopefully the Tigers have some runs left to support Kenny Rogers tomorrow.

*** OEs 3 Stars of the Game ***

#3 Curtis Granderson – 3-6 with a HR, 2 Rs, 8 TB, 3 RBI, .281 AVG
#2 Justin Verlander – Win (3), 7 IP, 6 Hs, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 Ks, 3.52 ERA
#1 Carlos Guillen – 3-4 with 2 HRs, 3 Rs, 5 RBI .314 AVG

On Tap – Game 25 (15-9) v. Minnesota Twins (9-14) April 27th, 7:05 ET
Kenny Rogers (3-2, 3.21) v. Kyle Lohse (1-1, 8.55)
