Grrrr-8 pitching effort once again from the Tigers. Nate Robertson, Fernando Rodney and Todd Jones team up for the eighth shutout in 43 games for Tigers pitching. Just under 20 % of the Tigers games this year have been shutouts!!!!! Robertson was brilliant getting out of jams including second and third with no out in the seventh. All he did was keep Cincinnati off the board with three straight grounders to third. On the second such grounder Brandon Inge threw out Adam Dunn attempting to score. Nate only allowed three hits on the afternoon. Although he did walk five which could have proven problematic, but his seven Ks help keep him out of further trouble. Fernando Rodney was in the right place at the right time to get the victory. He pitched to one batter and was credited with two outs in the eighth. Felipe Lopez was gunned down attempting to steal second by Vance Wilson and Rich Aurillia grounded to third. Todd Jones became the all-time leader in career saves with the Detroit Tigers. With his 13th save of the year and 155th with the Tigers Jones moved past Mike Henneman on Detroit’s save list. Jones replaced Henneman as Detroit’s closer in the 1995 season trading Henneman away for Phil Nevin.

Jim Leyland pushed the right buttons again in this one. With runners on the corners and one out in the ninth following an error by the pitcher Aaron Harang Leyland pinched hit Placido Polanco for Ramon Santiago. Polanco responded with an opposite field single to right scoring Brandon Inge. The run provided all the offense the Tigers needed on Sunday afternoon. The crowd of over 31,000 witnessed a great pitching battle between Nate Robertson and Aaron Harang. With the Cubbies victory over the Chi Sox the Tigers moved into sole possession of first place in the AL Central.

Robertson is starting to heat up! He's looking consistently good. Hopefully he can keep it up throughout the season! I'm going to have to retract my requests for Rodney being the closer as well. Jones is getting the job done right now! Good choice Leland and Dombrowski.
