It looks like I was right when I wrote about Roman Colon’s start that the Tigers are going to miss Mike Maroth who is out with elbow surgery. Zach Minor got his first career start and went four innings. The youngster gave up three runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out two. The bullpen did not have any better luck verses the Red Sox hitters. The Tigers sent out four straight relief pitchers who all surrendered at least on run until Chris Spurling was able to get through the final inning and one out with allowing any runs. Jamie Walker, Roman Colon, Bobby Seay and Jason Grilli were all victimized by the Sox offense. Boston hit four home runs to carry the load.

Detroit was never able to mount a comeback in this game. Pudge had two runs batted in on the day and Marcus Thames added a RBI double. But the Tigers never really threatened Boston on this afternoon. Detroit ended the home stand a disappointing 2-5 against the Yankees and Red Sox. The Tiger head to Chicago for an important series with the White Sox. Detroit remains in first in the AL Central with a 2.5 game lead on Chicago.

*** OEs 3 Stars of the Game ***

#3 Vance Wilson – 2-4 with a run scored
#2 Curtis Granderson – 2-3 with 2 runs scored and 1 BB
#1 Ivan Rodriguez – 2-4 with 2 RBI

On Tap – Game 58 (37-20) @ Chicago White Sox (34-22) June 6th, 8:05 ET
Nate Robertson (5-3, 3.42) v. Freddy Garcia (7-3, 4.57)

Don't forget about Leyland rage session #2. After Jason Grilli got two or more balls called in two batters that really hurt his chances at getting Ortiz and ManRam in the big inning and Vance Wilson gave it to the ump, Leyland absolutely went off on the home plate umpire. IMO it was absolutely justified, those pitches were strike earlier in the game and that ump just didn't have the balls to call them strikes because of the situation, two all-stars at an important time of the game. CUDO's to the Marlboro man, hopefully this sparks a new winning streak, especially with Chisox up next.
