At 59-28 the 2006 Detroit Tigers tied the club record for the best 87 game start sharing the honor with the 1984 and 1911 teams. Detroit now sits 31 games above .500 for the first time on the year. With Boston’s victory over Chicago along with Detroit’s third straight victory the Tiger open a 3 game lead in the Central.

Zach Minor picked up his sixth straight victory. He worked five innings before giving way to the bullpen that came through in a big way. Minor only gave up a solo home run to Raul Ibanez in the second inning. However his pitch count was already at 100 after the fifth. Five pitchers combined to work the final four innings and preserve the one run victory. Jamie Walker pitched a perfect sixth striking out two. Jason Grilli, Wilfredo Ledezma and Fernando Rodney got Detroit through the seventh. Rodney pitched well in the eighth coming back after some recent struggles. Todd Jones picked up his 23rd save of the season working a 1-2-3 ninth on only eight pitches.

The Tigers offense had a tough go against Jarrod Washburn. Chris Shelton hit a RBI single in the second and had a two hit game. Carlos Guillen took advantage of an error by the Seattle shortstop and singled in what turned out to be the winning run. Guillen had a pair of hits in the game as did Ivan Rodriguez. The Mariners had a few disagreements on the evening with the home plate umpire resulting in the ejection of manager Mike Hargrove in the bottom of the sixth. Detroit looks to get their 60th victory before the All-Star break with Big Nate Chew toeing the mound.
