Game 41: Detroit Tigers 4 Cincinnati Reds 9
(By: The Olde English Ds)

All good things must come to an end. Cincinnati quickly disposed of Jeremy Bonderman ending the Tigers six game winning streak. Bonderman struggled with his control and was not able to get out of the fourth inning. The Reds offense came to life early scoring two runs including a Rich Aurillia home run in the second. Everything fell apart in the fourth inning for Bonderman as Cincinnati scored six runs. A single followed by two walks and a hit batter scored the third run and set the stage for the biggest hit of the game. With bases loaded Brandon Phillips tripled on the first pitch clearing the bases and coming home on Carlos Guillen’s throwing...

Game 40: Detroit Tigers 5 Minnesota Twins 3
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Detroit broke out the lumber early against the Twins with both their bats and brooms. The Tigers swept Minnesota for the second time this year in two series at Copa. Apparently Torii Hunter’s guarantees carry as much weight as those made by Rasheed Wallace. Hunter said before this three game set that the Twins would not be swept again like they were during the 33-1 shellacking the first meeting. This game proved to be sloppy, but the Tigers were able to hold on for the victory behind a couple home runs and solid pitching again from Kenny Rogers. Roger’s pitched despite being sick with a gutsy performance. The Professor, as Rogers is known to the...

Game 39: Detroit Tigers 2 Minnesota Twins 0
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Unbelievable!!! Excellent pitch and timely hitting from the bench led the Tigers to their sixth straight victory and seventh team shutout on the season. Detroit is now 13 games above .500 and with Chicago’s win remained tied for first in the AL Central. Justin Verlander displayed wisdom well beyond his years in a great battle against Cy Young winner Johan Santana. Verlander pitched eight scoreless innings without walking or striking out a batter. He limited Minnesota to six hits and only five outs went beyond the infield. Verlander did receive help from his defense as Justin Morneau singled in the fourth, but Michael Cuddyer was thrown out after rounding third too far. Verlander induced...

Game 38: Detroit Tigers 7 Minnesota Twins 4
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Bless you boys! The 2006 Tigers are bringing joy back to Mudville. Nate Robertson becomes the last of the Tigers starters to break the four win barrier and Todd Jones earned his 10th save in 11 opportunities. Detroit continues to get solid starting pitching, great relief efforts and timely hitting. All of these things have been talked about, but not been on display in the D for about 20 years. The Tigers now have a five game winning streak, which is their fourth such streak on the young season. Detroit is tied with Chicago for the AL Central lead and best record in the Majors.

Tiger hitters again enjoyed feasting off the weak pitching of Kyle...

Sheer Optimism and Joy
(By: The Olde English Ds)

I continue waiting either for someone to pinch me or to wake up. Here it is more than halfway through May and the Tigers sit tied for the lead in the AL Central and the best record in all of baseball. Now I realize it is early, but usually the Tigers are out of contention by this time. Normally all the hype around the youngsters would have died out and they would be exposed as frauds. Typically there would be a major injury to a key player by now or another instance of a veteran player not coming through. However, at this point none of these things have occurred. Jim Leyland has the club playing...

AAA Starting Pitching
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Not only does the present of the Detroit Tigers pitching staff look good, but so does the future. In addition to Bonderman and Verlander, the youngster who will form the top of the rotation for years to come, the Detroit system is getting quality efforts from their pitchers at AAA Toledo. Jordan Tata, who was with the big club pitching out of the pen, has just joined the rotation. He got roughed up in his first outing, but has shown he has the ability to pitch in the big leagues. Tata in a sense was promoted from the Tigers to the Mud Hens to work back into a starting role. The 24 year old Tata is...

Game 37: Detroit Tigers 3 Cleveland Indians 2
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Sweep. Detroit completed the first ever franchise sweep of the Indians at Jacobs field. The Tigers came from behind scoring 3 runs in the seventh and waited out a 59 minute rain delay to take advantage of sloppy Cleveland play. Cleveland took a 1-0 lead in the sixth on three straight singles and an error by Magglio Ordonez. The error allowed the run to score so the only run Maroth allowed was unearned. Detroit tied the game in the seventh on a double by Monroe driving in Guillen. They took the lead as two runs scored on a ground ball off the bat of Vance Wilson that turned into an error on the first baseman...

Game 36: Detroit Tigers 3 Cleveland Indians 0
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Bonderman!!! One word describes the dominance of this game for the Tigers. Jeremy pitched one of the best games in his career shutting down the powerful Indians line-up. Detroit has now shutout Cleveland twice this year and have six total team shutouts, which leads the league and is double the nearest competitor. Bonderman worked eight shutout innings before giving way to Jones for his ninth save in ten opportunities. With the victory by the Twins over the White Sox for the second straight game the team sporting the Olde English D moved to within a half game of first place.

Bonderman took a no-hitter into the fifth and only gave up three hits in...

Game 35: Detroit Tigers 5 Cleveland Indians 4
(By: The Olde English Ds)

This one got a bit scary for the Tigers in the end. However, Detroit managed to hang on and win a tough game Tigers teams of the past often lost. Kenny Rogers pitched into the seventh inning allowing only two runs before giving way to the Zumaya, Rodney and Jones trio to finish things off. Zumaya gave up a home run off a 97 mph fastball before getting the final two outs of the seventh for his 10th hold. Rodney picked up his 4th hold of the year after pitching out of big trouble in the 8th. Once again an error almost cost the Tigers dearly. With runners at first and second and no outs...

Game 34: Detroit Tigers 6 Baltimore Orioles 3
(By: The Olde English Ds)

In Verlander and Zumaya we trust! Verlander pitched well to earn his fourth win of his rookie season and end the Tigers losing streak. Joel Zumaya equally impressive pitched out of a jam with poise to earn his ninth hold. Verlander pitched into the seventh before loading the bases and giving way to Zumaya. Joel paved the way to the ninth inning where Todd Jones bounced back to get his seventh save on the year.

Detroit’s offense started with a couple runs in the first on a RBI double by the hot-hitting Magglio and a RBI single by Carlos Guillen. The game remained close at 2-1 until the Tigers exploded in the seventh for four...

Game 33: Detroit Tigers 6 Baltimore Orioles 7
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Pitching and defense, the keys to winning baseball, both eluded the Tigers on Tuesday. For the second time in three games the bullpen blew a victory for the starting pitcher. This time it was Fernando Rodney letting down Nate Robertson. Carlos Guillen giveth and Carlos Guillen taketh away. For the third time on the young season Guillen had his third two error game, which is out of character for the normally solid defensive shortstop. Guillen doubled in three runs, but his errors lead directly to three unearned runs including the game winner. Each error occurred with two out in the inning and the Tigers would have escaped without further damage has the plays been made....

Game 32: Detroit Tigers 2 Minnesota Twins 4
(By: The Olde English Ds)

This game really makes the blown save on Saturday evening hurt. It is tough to bounce back and take the series when facing the best pitcher in baseball Johan Santana. He no-hit the Tigers through six innings while striking out eleven batters in the game. Pudge broke up the no-hitter leading off the seventh. Magglio Ordonez followed with his third home run in three games against the Twins. This cut the Twins lead in half, but was all the Tigers could manage. Detroit didn’t have Polanco, Guillen, Young and Granderson in the line-up against Santana. Each of the players, except Granderson, needed the day off because of injury concerns. Not having these bats...

Game 31: Detroit Tigers 6 Minnesota Twins 7
(By: The Olde English Ds)

The honeymoon finally came to an end. The Tigers bullpen had been a perfect 11 for 11 in save opportunities on the year. The pen has been so dominant they had not suffered a loss in the first 30 games. Detroit rode the Rollercoaster quickly down for the first blown save of the season. Jones blamed himself for the loss after giving up a triple to tie the game at 6 and a game winning single to Luis Castillo. This was bound to happen at some point and I don’t read too much into this. It will be a good opportunity to see how the Tigers respond to a tough loss. The only thing...

Game 30: Detroit Tigers 9 Minnesota Twins 6
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Kyle Lohse is having a tough season for the Twinkies. He really is not giving his team an opportunity to win games. The Tigers took advantage of this for the second time in just over a week to come away with a 9-6 victory their 20th in 30 games. Kenny Rogers got the win on a night he struggled. He only went five innings and gave up a run in all but one of those innings. The offense picked him up, which is well deserved as he has been shutting down opponents all year. Roger’s tough start ended a streak of eight straight games for Detroit with a quality start. The Gambler never surrendered...

Game 29: Detroit Tigers 2 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 7
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Another poor get-away day game for the Detroit Tigers. It seems like the afternoon games on their way out of town end up going badly for Detroit. Not much good to say about the effort. The Tigers offense struggled only able to generate one run, off the starter, on a triple by Alexis Gomez and a sac fly by Magglio. Detroit made the fill in starter Kevin Gregg look like Pedro Martinez. They only managed three hits against him in seven innings. For good measure they added a single run off Donnelly in the eighth.

The Tigers young pitchers took their lumps today. Verlander did not have his good stuff today. His velocity was...

Game 28: Detroit Tigers 2 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 1
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Jim Leyland continues to push all of the right buttons for the Detroit Tigers. With the Wizard calling the shots the Tigers improved to 19-9 in an old fashioned pitching dual. Once again Detroit received a brilliant outing from their starter and clutch hitting from a reserve player to pull out their sixth straight victory.

Nate Robertson struggled in the first inning giving up a sacrifice fly off the bat of Guerrero. However, he avoided further damage in the first and proceeded to pitch an additional six scoreless innings. Nate kept the Tigers in the game until they were able to tie the game on a Brandon Inge home run in the sixth. Robertson struck...

Game 27: Detroit Tigers 4 Kansas City Royals 1
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Finally...thanks to the White Sox loss to Cleveland the Tigers picked up a game in the AL Central Standings. Improving to 18-9 Detroit now sits a half-game behind the World Series Champions. The Tigers look to go 10 games above .500 against the Angels tonight, which is something I am too young to remember happening. I imagine 1987 would be the last time, but only being 8 it wasn’t something I fully appreciated. Nate Robertson looks to extend his 14 inning scoreless streak against former Tiger Jeff Weaver and the Halos.

The Tigers were able to move up a game in the standing in large part from the continued strong pitching from their starters. Mike Maroth has...

Game 26: Detroit Tigers 3 Minnesota Twins 2
(By: The Olde English Ds)

I had a strong feeling going into this game Bonderman would be dominant. The Tigers pitching staff has been incredibly good so far this season and Bondy has the worst ERA of any of the starters. He is a competitive guy who wants to be an ace. He pitched like one on Monday. Jeremy struck out nine while walking one batter and allowed only four hits. Bonderman threw eight shut out innings (94 pitches) before giving way to Todd Jones for the save opportunity. Bonderman was not given the chance to finish the game despite his relatively low pitch count. I was a little surprised by this, but I am not going to second...

Game 25: Detroit Tigers 6 Minnesota Twins 0
(By: The Olde English Ds)

33-1. That was the margin of victory for the Tigers in the 3 games dismantling of the Twins. Sunday’s game was just the latest in a series of great performances by the Tigers starting pitcher. Kenny Rogers tossed 8 scoreless innings allowing only two hits to Minnesota and being backed up by strong defense. Todd Jones pitched the ninth to get some work in. Sunday marked the fifth team shut out of the month of April for Detroit, which sets a new team mark for the month of April.

The offense again took advantage of poor pitching by the Twins. Marcus Thames is on one of his power streaks blasting a 2 run shot in the...

Game 24: Detroit Tigers 18 Minnesota Twins 1
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Today is a great sports day for Detroit. Two playoff games with the Redwings in a pivotal game five verse the Oilers and the Pistons going for a 3-0 lead verse the Bucks. The Super Bowl for the Lions…the NFL Draft started at noon and the Lions fans were booing the pick by 2. Let’s not forget the Detroit Tigers and Justin Verlander who are generating some positive buzz around town. Once again they teed off on Minnesota’s pitching, which is much worse than I figured them to be in April. Ouch!!!

Break out the power stick Carlos Guillen!!! He blasted a 3-run homer in the bottom of the first off Carlos Silva following opposite field...

Game 23: Detroit Tigers 9 Minnesota Twins 0
(By: The Olde English Ds)

An early offensive explosion helped the Tigers in the first game of the weekend series verses the Twins. Detroit jumped all over Radke who couldn’t get out of the third inning. Poor pitching doomed Minnesota as the Tigers battered Radke for six runs on nine hits raising his ERA another point to 8.89. Carlos Guillen began the scoring with a bases loaded sac fly in the first driving in Polanco. Marcus Thames finally got another hit breaking a 0-19 slump blasting his third home run in the second. The third inning explosion is where the damage was done. Detroit loaded the bases again for Carlos Guillen who cleared them this time with a three RBI...

Game 22: Detroit Tigers 0 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 4
(By: The Olde English Ds)

All good things must come to an end. The scoreless streak for Mike Maroth ended at 20.2 innings. The first run followed an error. Carlos Guillen’s throwing error with two outs allowed Cabrera to reach second. Garrett Anderson followed with a RBI single to score the unearned run. The next batter Vlad, bombed a 2-run homer to left. To give the Angels a 3-0 lead. The defense let Maroth down as he would have been out of the inning 1-2-3 without the throwing error. Detroit committed another error in the fifth helping the Angels score another run. Maroth gave up four runs in six innings.

Maroth had his worst outing of the year,...

Game 21: Detroit Tigers 5 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 2
(By: The Olde English Ds)

The strong pitching continues out west for the Detroit Tigers. This time it was Jeremy Bonderman’s turn to put in the quality start. He benefited from the offense scoring a few runs to earn his second win on the year. Bonderman went 6 innings striking out six and allowing two runs on only three hits.

The bullpen shortened the game the final three innings. Jamie Walker did a great job in nearly two innings of work getting out the Angels tough left-handed hitters. Joel Zumaya got the final out in the eight and Todd Jones got his third save in an easy ninth inning.

The offense performed better in this game taking advantage of Hector Carrasco being...
