O's, Chen Cruise By Yanks, Yanks Off To Worst Start Since 91
(By: rft3rd)

The Headline:

Chen completely dominates Yankees (www.theorioles.com)
4-6 Yankees off to worst start since 1991 (www.espn.com)

The Rave:

The 6-4 Orioles once again benefited from great teamwork. From Roberts getting 3 hits and Sosa and Tejada continuing their power surge to Chen pitching a masterful 9 innings of 4 hit ball, the team is showing the baseball world how it's done the "new" Oriole way.

Roberts goes 3 for 5 (raising his average to .429) and knocking in a run. This kid is arguably the best leadoff hitter the Orioles have had in the last 20 years. Yes thats above and beyond Mr. Sideburns IMHO. They key to the Orioles continuing to produce runs for their pitchers is the top of the order guys getting...

Opening Week Review
(By: rft3rd)

The Headline:

Orioles finish first week of 2005 season at 3-3: Takes first series with Yanks 2-1.

The Rants and the Raves:

The first week of the 2005 season is now in the books for the Baltimore Orioles. There are a few things that are quite suprising about this team and how they have performed as well as some NOT so suprising things. Losing 2 out of 3 from the A's and their average pitching while pounding on the Yankees and their "improved rotation" is just 1 example.

Here is my list of top 10 suprises after 6 games of Orioles Baseball.

10 - Sammy Sosa's weekly line: 5 for 25 with no rbis and no HR.
This is truly a WTF??? moment....

O's shot down in an 'A's' of glory
(By: rft3rd)

The Headline:

Cabrera's first start a rough one: Orioles right-hander allows five runs in 3 1/3 innings in loss

The Rant:

The confidence and patience that was the story of opening day this year is exactly what was lacking tonight as the Orioles got trounced by the A's 9-0.

A long yet relativly un eventful first inning pitched by Cabrera culmonated into a total breakdown in the second inning. Cabrera notches one of Ginters 3 strike outs then hits Charles Thomas. And then Cabrera's control leaves him like the wind.

Cabrera goes 0-2 in Swisher and can't finish him off (single),
1-2 to Scutaro before losing him to a walk,
on 4 consecutive foul balls, goes 0-2 to Kotsay who grounds out to Roberts but picks up...

20lbs heavier and 5 MPH faster; Cabrera takes the hill
(By: rft3rd)

The Headline:

O's will count on stronger Cabrera: Right-hander set to make season debut on Wednesday (www.theorioles.com)

The Rave:

Daniel Cabrera, winner of 12 games in his rookie year and a runner up for the ROY award, takes the hill for the first time this season a totally different pitcher then last year. Cabrera shows up at camp with 20 pounds of muscle added to him and a fastball that topped out at 98 MPH, 5 MPH faster then last year. Add a newly found changup to that and you have the makings of a 15 game winner on your hands.

2 Years ago, Rodrigo Lopez won 15 games for the Orioles in his rookie year and in the time span of 2002-2004, pitched...

Opening Day 2005
(By: rft3rd)

The Headline:

O's across the board in Opening Day win: Lopez throws six scoreless innings; Sosa goes 2-for-4 (www.theorioles.com)

The Rave:

Baseball is back in Baltimore folks, and the Orioles have burst back onto the scene!

Ok it's just one game, I know that but humor me these few paragraphs.

Much has been made about the top to bottom strenght of the Orioles starting lineup. Some have touted this years lineup as one of the best in recent memory. Others have focused on the addition of Sosa and say that he is in decline and won't help the team except maybe to drive ticket sales. Still others have overlooked the lineup completely and just based the young guns in the rotation. Well folks, It...

162 and counting: Play Ball!
(By: rft3rd)

The Headline:
Orioles finalize 25-man roster
Bauer to pen; Dubose & Nivar to AAA (www.theorioles.com)

The Commentary:

Remember those horrible commercials about the new birds that flew into town and the 108 homers they hit in 2003??? We got 80 of em in 2004. This year we add Sosa and the combined homer total for 2004 was only 115. I don't think we will be seeing graphical home run totals in commercials this year.

The Orioles have improved their offense yet again this year and its not all the front offices doing. A healthy Matos and Gibbons are what will round out the offense and give the team the 1-9 productivity and consistancy it needs if the Orioles wish to contend this year.

Now I would...

Matos Mk II
(By: rft3rd)

The Headline:

O's overcome Cards in the ninth: Matos hits RBI triple to lift Baltimore.

The Rave:

For my first rave of he Baltimore Orioles this season, I only had one choice as to who the topic would be about. Luis Matos.

The preseason line to date:

25 for 65 (.385) with 4 doubles, 2 homeruns, 37 total bases, 11 rbi's, and is slugging .569

Pretty impressive. Especially since he is leading the team in hits, runs scores, rbi's, total bases and slugging. WOW.

Now I know this is spring training. But I also have to say that the biggest story when camp breaks will be the team leading production of Matos. If these numbers are indicadive of this true potential, then this is what the team...

Ponson Demoted to AA?
(By: rft3rd)

The Headline:

Sir Sydney's off season and pre season antics flare up again over DUI in January.

The Rant:

Just why is it when I think the kid has his head on straight, he proves me wrong? Punching a judge in his homeland, punching a heckler at a club in Lauderdale, and now we have his DUI from back in January. Maybe Sir Syd needs more of a demotion then to 4th position in the rotation. Maybe he needs to skip AAA and go straight down to AA.

No I don't mean Bowie, I'm talking Alcholics Annonymous. Why might I say that? Well if the DUI was still unknown, there would be no real grounds for me to make such a comment. However his...

10-20 Years Tainted In 304 Pages
(By: rft3rd)

The Headline:

"In my opinion, everyone that plays baseball in this era has been tainted," Palmeiro said. "Not just the people that he has named in the book, I think this whole era over the last 10, 15 or 20 years has been tainted." -- ESPN.com

The Rant:

Isn't it a shame when the entire era of baseball that I know will be clouded by the words of a used up has-been. Sure these type of celebs do this kind of stuff to get back into the limelight and make some scratch, but to raise the collective American eyebrow to say "hmmmm.. maybe we need some more *'s?" is considered overkill.

To think that the man with the sweetest stroke of any baseball player today...

The 'ohhhh Riley!' Factor
(By: rft3rd)

The Headline:

The ongoing drama that is the fight for the fifth rotation spot has one less candidate tonight as one time top pitching prospect Matt Riley was taded to the Texas Rangers for another one time prospect Ramon Nivar, a OF/If who is slated to start in AAA.

The Rant:

WTF! Just when you think the Orioles would have done something stupid like putting Riley in the bullpen to give a rotation spot to Chen, they go and do something even more stupid and trade a golden left arm for a guy who will never play a game in an O's uniform.

So what if Riley had an attitude problem! Do you really think that Clemens, Pedro and the...
