Sox Pitchers Getting Socked by Cubs
(By: chicagocubsblogger)

Another great performance by the offense, overcoming an early 4-0 deficit, and a good showing by the bullpen gave the Cubs their second straight win over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday. They are now a season high six games over .500 and will go for the series sweep behind Glendon Rusch on Sunday night. Carlos Zambrano didn't look at the top of his game but the offense picked him up, scoring seven runs without a home run or without a hit from the first three batters in the lineup. Thankfully it sounds like Zambrano is fine after making an awkward slide into second base in the fifth inning and hurting his foot.

This series has been a lot of fun so...

Cubs and Red Sox Finally to Meet
(By: chicagocubsblogger)

This weekend's three-game series between the Cubs and Boston Red Sox is important, as both teams have similar records and are trying to make the playoffs. But there is much more to this series than that. The fact that these two teams have two of the biggest and strongest fan bases in professional sports, plus the fact that they haven't played each other since the 1918 World Series, makes this weekend's series huge -- if not historical. This series could have been even bigger than it will be already. The Red Sox won the World Series last year, but these two teams have suffered a combined total of 182 consecutive years without a title (with the Cubs' streak still going, of...

Mitre Solid as Cubs Avoid Sweep
(By: chicagocubsblogger)

On Monday and Tuesday the Cubs looked like the team from several weeks ago that made mental mistakes, left a lot of runners on base, and lost close games. However, on Wednesday, Sergio Mitre stepped up big with seven shoutout innings and an RBI double against one of the league's best pitchers, Roy Halladay, as the Cubs won over the Toronto Blue Jays 2-0. This is a big win as the Cubs avoid the sweep and go into their first off day in nearly three weeks with a little momentum back. Sergio Mitre has been up and down this year but gave his best outing of the year up to this point when the team really needed it. He might have...

Back Home After Big Trip
(By: chicagocubsblogger)

As the Cubs headed for the West Coast at the beginning of last week, I was relieved that they were able to win the last three games over the Rockies at home and get back to .500. I was honestly just hoping for a winning seven-game trip to Los Angeles and San Diego but they exceeded my expectations by going 6-1! They finished it off behind a great outing by Carlos Zambrano on Sunday and a 4-0 win over the Padres. They are currently alone atop the Wild Card standings (.5 game over Atlanta, 1 game over New York, Philadelphia, and Arizona, and 1.5 games over Los Angeles and Florida) and have the third-best record in the National League! Again, amazing...

Season Has Really Turned Around
(By: chicagocubsblogger)

Friday night's 6-2 loss to the San Diego Padres was the Cubs' first loss since I started this blog, and it ended their seven-game winning streak. The team came right back with an 11-5 win Saturday night behind Greg Maddux and another great showing by the offense. It is just amazing how quickly this season has turned around. Two weeks ago, I would have never believed that the Cubs would be the Wild Card leaders at this time. Right now they are in a virtual tie with Arizona and Washington but lead both of those teams by a percentage point in winning percentage. As bad as the Cubs were playing for a while, it was still relatively early and all it...

Cubs are on FIRE!!!
(By: chicagocubsblogger)

Last Thursday's 5-2 loss at home to the Rockies was the low point of the year. Then, the next day Mark Prior went down with a terrible injury. Since then, the Cubs have won seven in a row and have soared to just 5.5 games behind the Cardinals (five back in losses) and just one game behind the Diamondbacks for the wild card lead (tied in losses). This is the best I have seen this team play in a long time, and after everything that could have possibly gone wrong the first six weeks or so of the season did. Glendon Rusch has just done an outstanding job in the starting rotation, while Neifi Perez, filling in for Nomar Garciaparra, has...

Five in a Row After Close Win
(By: chicagocubsblogger)

Three or four weeks ago, it seemed as if every day the Cubs were losing games similar to Tuesday night's game in Los Angeles against the Dodgers, but this time they came out with a 10-inning, 2-1 win. Carlos Zambrano's great outing did not go to waste when Neifi Perez -- who should at least get some All-Star consideration -- drove in the game-winning run in the tenth inning. The Cubs caught a break because Eric Gagne only stayed in for one inning (9th). Had this been later in the season or if Gagne was at full strength he likely would have stayed in for at least one more inning. Ryan Dempster nailed down his sixth save, as finally someone was...

Good Way to Start the West Coast Trip
(By: chicagocubsblogger)

May 31, 2005

Aramis Ramirez had another great game to help the Cubs beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 Monday evening, and they are now on a season-high four-game winning streak. They also started the big seven-game west coast trip with a win, and they really need to win this series now, especially with a four-game series upcoming against a red hot San Diego Padres team. Ramirez is heating up at just the right time after a couple of nagging injuries early in the season. It seemed last year like the Cubs offense overall played its best when he was on the top of his game. Greg Maddux pitched a solid game and the young bullpen pitched just well enough to hold...

Finally, Back to .500
(By: chicagocubsblogger)

May 29, 2005

Well, after Thursday's pathetic performance you had to figure that winning the next three in a row against the Colorado Rockies was a must, and that's exactly what the Cubs have done after winning an 11-6 slugfest at Wrigley on Sunday. Jeromy Burnitz had a homer and four RBIs, Aramis Ramirez had three hits including a homer and four RBIs, and Derrek Lee continued his hot streak with three hits and three runs scored. Sergio Mitre didn't have a particularly good outing but thankfully the Cubs offense rescued him and the bullpen was able to stop the Rockies from scoring. I really don't think Mitre is a long-term answer in that rotation but he's been pressed into duty with...

Being Tough on the Announcers?
(By: chicagocubsblogger)

I've noticed that some Cubs fans have been extremely critical towards the new announcers, Len Kasper and Bob Brenly. I'm as upset as anyone that Steve Stone is gone. I really enjoyed hearing his commentary on the games for all those years and it is really difficult to watch as he does games on ESPN when WGN is where he belongs. A group of players (three of whom -- Moises Alou, Kent Mercker, and LaTroy Hawkins -- are already gone) forced Stoney out when all he did was his job: saying that the team stinks when they did late last year.

However, I think that Kasper and Brenly are doing an outstanding job. I like their down-to-earth, simplistic yet descriptive approach. The...
