Cardinals acquire OF Cedeno from Mets
ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Cardinals added outfield depth Saturday, acquiring Roger Cedeno from the New York Mets for infielder Wilson Delgado and catcher Chris Widger.
The Mets had been trying to unload Cedeno, who made $4.87 million last season. New York signed outfielders Karim Garcia and Shane Spencer in the offseason, pushing Cedeno out of a job.
Cedeno, who was in his second stint with the Mets, batted .267 with seven homers, 37 RBIs and and 14 stolen bases in 148 games last season.
In St. Louis, Cedeno could spell Lankford in left field. Jim Edmonds and Reggie Sanders have the other outfield spots wrapped up.
Cedeno, 29, also has played with Los Angeles, Houston and Detroit. He is a career .275 hitter with 37 homers, 243 RBIs and 208 stolen bases in 968 games. The speedster stole a career-high 66 bases with the Mets in 1999.
Delgado, 31, has been a utility player throughout his career. He is joining his sixth team and is a career .238 hitter with three homers and 30 RBIs in 211 games.
Widger, 32, gives the Mets a third catcher behind Mike Piazza and Vance Wilson. He is joining his fifth team and is a career .242 hitter with 50 homers and 202 RBIs in 532 games.
