Pool 1 Tiebreakers

I don't know if they're changing tie breakers on the fly, or if people just it wrong in the first round, but the second tie-breaker is runs allowed per 9 innings among the tied teams, not total runs allowed among the tied teams. This means Mexico does indeed have a chance to advance today. The scenarios are detailed here in a sidebar.

This also highlights the problem with the tiebreakers. For the Mexicans to advance, they have to keep the game scoreless for 13 innings, then score three runs in the bottom of the 13th inning. There is no incentive for Mexico to try to score at all in this game until very late.

Also, do they change the rule, so that Mexico keeps batting in the bottom of the 13th, even if they score a single run? Or do they have to hit a three-run homer or better?

Did you ever play one of the newer game board versions of Risk? There were some cool alternative ways to play that reminded me of this. Each player drew a card from this pile of "win condition" cards. You kept your card hidden during the game. And the first person to accomplish what was on their card would show it and immediately win... or you could just win the game normally... but it was usually easier to accomplish what was on the card. So you had things like "Control Asia for two consecutive turns" or "Amass 42 armies in the Ukraine" or whatever. It kept it interesting. Would be hysterical if Selig spoke with each manager prior to the game and gave them win conditions. If the Padres were playing the Giants this year, the Padres might have the goal of getting Barry Bonds to swing and miss three times during the game. Or have Bellhorn complete 3 plate appearances without recording a strikeout or a walk.

I did play Risk, but I don't remember the win conditions. That sounds like fun.

Yeah, in my post yesterday, I gave a nod to Mexico advancing but since I was just focusing on the US team, I didn't detail all of the scenarios. It's just as confusing.
