Whatcha Gonna Do When Jobamania Runs Wild on You?
Friday, May 30, 2008
Mark your calendars, munecas: Joba will be the starting pitcher against the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday. He'll be limited to approximately 70 pitches for his first start, which will probably work out to about 5 innings if he stays economical. Pettitte will be pitching Monday, and the Yanks are going to need him to go deep into the game so that the bullpen is rested and ready to take over after Joba leaves the game on Tuesday.

There's been a lot of chatter about this move into the rotation, from sheer excitement to skepticism to downright outrage. Some are convinced he'll be a star anywhere he pitches, while other folks think it might end up being a disaster. Personally, I foresee good things from Joba and look forward to quadruple the amount of solid innings he'll give the Yanks in this role than he would have as a reliever all year. Of course, it's very important not to expect perfection, even from Jobamania. It's unlikely he'll maintain his current sub-2.00 ERA as a starter; more likely, he'll put up a solid 3-4.00 ERA with a good strikeout to walk ratio.

Thoughts? Predictions?

I'm still not convinced this was the right move.
Even if Joba has an amazing start, who's going to come in after his 70 pitch limit is hit? Farnsworth? Veras? Hawkins? We've already seen what happens with a close game headed into the late innings and no Joba to call on.
I have a bit more faith in Edwar but overall, I think we're giving up more wins then we're going to gain by making Joba a starter.

And on an unrelated note..whats up with the contest for the Legacy cards??

Too soon, YC. It's SUPPOSED to take more than a week to stretch out a kid's arm like that. But hey, what do I know, right?

He's got to be in the rotation.. but 70 pitches is going to be about 4 to 5 innings. They better have someone lined up to go another 4. What do we have in the wings (already on the 40 man roster/not injured)? Chase Wright maybe?

Yeah, never thought I'd see tandem starts outside of, you know, A ball.

I would prefer Joba in the bullpen. He can contribute in more games, solidify the 8th inning, and be groomed to succeed Mariano. We kow he is outstanding there so there is no risk.

I think he will do fine as a starter, but I am not sure he will be a star there. I would much rather keep him in a place he could become one of the best of all time.

No need to worry about pitch count because he won't make it out of the second inning.

He's not Nolan Ryan ya know. He's just a one inning rookie pitcher, which is why he has looked so good.

Heck, I could pitch one inning every few days and be called a hero too!

A cold slap of reality is on its way on Tuesday for Yankeeville. I hope you all can handle it!

Joba this and Joba that. Just let him pitch, and if he sucks as a starter then put him back in middle relief. All this bickering on whether he should start or not seems pointless now since the club seems set on starting him.

-Mr Anonymous. By any chance are you , Eric Gagne ? Cuz he's been my hero for awhile.

last year joba came up to fill a void in the bullpen....if u create another void...it leaves room for someone else to come up there and shine

also, this is what joba wants to do....he should be allowed to make the decision and do what he enjoys doing....we have only one life to live, why not live it right?

MO started a few games when he came up.

Let the kid have this chance....we do this now, and we wont have to worry in August, with the coulda woulda shouldas!
