Rodney replacing Jones as closer, Leyland says

Detroit Tigers pitcher Fernando Rodney closes the game in the ninth inning of a 6-4 win over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.

DETROIT — The "Rollercoaster" ride is over, at least for now.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland announced today that he is replacing closer Todd "Rollercoaster" Jones with Fernando Rodney, who responded by striking out the side in the ninth inning during a non-save situation.

That news overshadowed the second straight strong start by Zach Miner since moving out of the bullpen and being recalled from Toledo. Miner allowed two runs and five hits without a walk, and struck out five in six innings during a 6-4 Detroit win over the Chicago White Sox.Oh, and Joel Zumaya, once considered the likely successor to Jones, left the game in the top of the eighth inning with right triceps tightness. Zumaya, who had reconstructive surgery nine months ago on the AC joint in his right shoulder, will be evaluated daily.

Leyland informed Jones of the move Saturday night.
