Comments on: FIP added!
by: Rob Reed | December 16, 2008, 1:46pm

I have added the category of "Fielding Independent Pitching," which is an estimator of an actual ERA without considering defensive factors and focusing only on pitching.

Here's an article on the formula we use here: http://www.ehow.com
/how_2288361_calculate-fip-statistic.html

The formula was created by Tom Tango at tangotiger.net, and is detailed in his book that is sold on that site.

In truth, to me, the formula seems very arbitrary. For instance, why multiply homers by 13? Why add 3.20? I have no clue, but I am no statistician.

So, I'm not sold on this statistic yet, but it will be interesting to analyze pitchers using only the ERA and FIP stats to try and predict the dopes from the studs.

I have read proponents of the stat point to Fausto Carmona. In 2007, he had a solid season, posting a 3.06 ERA. PLAYERtrack ranked him as the 11th best pitcher in all of baseball. His FIP told another story (3.74). And, as we know, in 2008, Carmona got rocked around.

I would counter with Cole Hamels. Cole had a 3.39 ERA and a 3.75 FIP in 2007. One could then reasonably assume that Hamels would have had a regression in 2008. But, instead, Hamels was incredible, posting a 3.09 ERA and making himself the 6th best pitcher according to PLAYERtrack.

I become a fan of FIP if, in 2009, Hamels becomes the same goat Carmona was in 2008. This is because Cole Hamels looks remarkably like Carmona did in 2007.

Carmona's 2007: 3.06 ERA, 3.74 FIP.

Hamels' 2008: 3.09 ERA, 3.78 FIP.

If Hamels continues to dominate in 2009, we may be dealing with a flawed statistic.
