Comments on: Tale of Two Seasons (T.O.T.S.) #1
by: Rob Reed | December 27, 2008, 6:39pm

Welcome to the Tale of Two Seasons column, where I'll post a particular player's notable statistics from two different seasons, generally focusing on a notable improvement or crash. In the name of brevity, I'll be referring to these fellows as "TOTs."

Our first TOT pulled an "Adrian Beltre" in 2007, where he broke through the ranks of fantasy obscurity by conveniently tearing it up in a walk-off year. Then, he came back to return to fantasy disappointment.

After his 2007 breakout season, this TOT ended up signing a 5-year, $60 million dollar contract. His new team, obviously, was impressed by his .309 AVG, 27 HRs, 89 RBI, and 105 runs scored. He earned a respectable .873 OPS in 2007, and he ranked 36th among all Major Leaguers in standard 5x5 fantasy according to PLAYERtrack (minimum 300 ABs and 20 games played at a position).

TOT #1 made his Major League debut in 2001 as a pinch-hitter against the Cardinals. In 2003, he was sent back down to the minor leagues after hitting only .133 in his first 60 games.

After this demotion, he started to tear it up. He led all AL center fielders in HR in 2004 with 24, and he came close to 20-20 with 17 stolen bases.

In his best season of 2007, he earned his first All-Star game selection, and he won his first Gold Glove award for his defensive work.

After such an amazing season, he followed in 2008 with only 13 HRs, a .271 AVG, an OPS over .100 points below the previous season, only 70 RBI, 57 R, and he only successfully stole 2 of 6 bases.

Have you figured out TOT #1 yet?

Here are some extra tidbits: His first cousin is Jamie Shields. The team he played for in 2007, but which he opted not to return, ended up winning the World Series last season. He broke his ankle in late 2006 by colliding with Chase Utley. He turns 32 in 2009.

Still no? This should do it. It was the lowly San Francisco Giants who signed him in 2008.

Do you have an opinion as to why this player had such a breakdown, other than he just overperformed in his free agent year, or that he underperformed because he had little support in the lineup? Sound off in the comments!
