Comments on: NL-only draft almost in the books
by: Rob Reed | March 19, 2009, 12:10am

Man, I forgot how hard single league play was... I haven't played in a single league fantasy game for a good 8 or 9 years. And, I rediscovered a very important thing.

Don't overspend early. Leave the crazy bidders alone. Perhaps, get one of the stud players and then sit, sit, sit!

Because this was my first real draft of the season, I got a bit overly excited, and I declared to my baseballgeeks podcast partner, Gregg, just before the draft that I was going to aim for not one, but two of the triple threat of Hanley Ramirez, Jose Reyes, and Pujols.

And, then I just got downright silly.

I went in with a strategy of securing the positionally scarce spots of SS and C. I was successful, but at what cost?

We still have two reserve picks to go (there is mostly junk out there). As you can see, I have a NUMBEr of gaping wounds, but the plus is that I have a number of trade possibilities.

What happened is I simply overspent early. I haven't yet decided if this was a horrific draft because it seems that the majority of teams were overspending. The problem is that the better teams were overspending maybe $5-$7, while I was overspending as much as $10.

Enough of the rambling... here's the roster. What do you think I should do with this team, other than wave the white flag? :)

I figure that I need to trade a catcher for some power... and I'm gonna live or die with Dan Haren, Chris Young, and Ryan Dempster.
