If Jimmy Rollins passes DiMaggio's record, the Elias Sports Bureau, statistical guardian of the game, said it would acknowledge both marks: one for a single season and another that bridged two seasons. I totally disagree with this. It's not easy getting back in shape after a four month layover during the offseason and start off the season with hits in 20 straight games. This is not to take away from DiMaggio's streak because it's just as difficult to hit in 56 straight games during the season as well. But, if Rollins is able to accomplish the nearly impossible task of hitting in 57 straight games, then the record should be solely his.
In a way, this latest controversy reminds me of how former Commissioner Ford Frick put an asterisk on Roger Maris' homerun record in '61 because it was done in a 162 game season, while Babe Ruth did it in 154. Frick neglected the fact that Ruth didn't have to travel much because there were fewer teams during his time and never had to go farther than St. Louis for a game.
