This is another reason why a salary cap is needed. Other teams, particularly the small market ones, don't stand much of a chance in this day and age of stratospheric and out of control salaries among players. If the NBA and NFL can level their playing fields in this area, then baseball certainly can. For now, George Steinbrenner gets first crack at the best players money can buy and even overpay some of them (i.e. Johnny Damon for $52 mill.), mainly for egotistical reasons.
