Justin Verlander did not get his eleventh win before the All-Star break and he may fall short of making the final slot on the AL All-Star team. However, Verlander pitched like an All-Star and will be one many times before his career is over. He only allowed three hits and a single run in seven innings. Verlander lowered his ERA to 3.01 on the season and was lights-out after the first inning. The A’s managed a single, walk and a two-out single to score a run in the first.

The game was an excellent pitchers dual between two youngsters. Dan Haren limited the Detroit offense to four hits over seven innings. Vance Wilson took Haren yard in the fifth to tie the score. The remainder of the game proved to be a battle between the two bullpens. Oakland’s pen came out on top as the A’s scored in the 10th to give Fernando Rodney his third defeat of the season. Rodney struggled with his control as he walked two batters in the tenth. A single by Payton provided the margin of victory. For the second straight game Jay Payton delivered the big hit giving Oakland the first two games of the series. The last couple of outings have been a difficult struggle for Fernando Rodney. He has given up ten runs, five earned runs, in his last three outings. In July his ERA has went up a run from 2.79 to 3.86.
