Wow. I didn't see this coming... a National League team retaining the services of an aging catcher, who was already in the process of evolving OUT of the catcher position?
At this point in his career, Piazza is unlikely to start more than 70 games at catcher. But, it's still a good move for the Pads after the loss of Ramon Hernandez. When I heard that S.D. and Philly were the top two finalists for Mike this week, I thought he'd be a better fit for his hometown team backing up the injury-plagued Lieberthal. Nonetheless, he'll still be an asset in San Diego.
Padres made a wise move. Nothing to lose really, at this price. He could be as productive as Hernandez was last year, especially considering how many games Ramon sat out.
Wish the Angels could've nabbed him. I'm thinking the Angels believe in their young hitters enough to save the cash for a while.
