Red Sox Chick, by way of CBS Sportsline, found out this interesting fact. Thanks, Cyn...

I know South Africa was being humiliated out there (what do you expect from Cricket players?), but I don't remember hearing about them forfeiting the game. So, it's a mystery as to why the game was called after five innings.

Actually, the rules say that a game will end after 5 inning if a team is winning by 15+ runs.

From the the World Baseball Classic web site (http://www.worldbaseballclassic.com/2006/about/inde
x.jsp?sid=wbc
)

"The umpire-in-chief will award a regulation game in Rounds 1 or 2 of the tournament to the Team that:

Is ahead by 10 or more runs when the opposing team has batted in at least seven innings;
Is ahead by 15 or more runs when the opposing team has batted in at least five innings.
Note: A game can be terminated in the middle of an inning if the team reaches the necessary number while at bat. The game will end immediately after that run is scored, unless it is because of a home run, in which case all runs score(similar to games won in a team's last turn at bat)"

You're right and thanks for the link, Conor!!!! Personally, I don't understand why they don't allow the teams to play ball for the full nine innings. I played in quite a few T-Ball games with lopsided scores like that back in the day (hitting off a Tee is much easier than hitting a curve or fastball thrown at you), but I don't remember any of those games being stopped early. There's no harm in letting the teams play for a full game.

Mt t-ball league had a Mercy rule. We always ended the game early when a team was demolishing someone else. It's just embarrassing. Its a way to stop the bleeding.

I also believe its to insure players from not getting hurt. Why play a meaningless extra 4 innings [You are up by 15, good luck coming back]

OT - Puerto Rico upsets DR!!!! LOL! Awesome....
