It looks like Nomar will be joined on Monday by Kenny Lofton at the Dodger press conference. This will help fill their centerfield spot, but I still believe that Johnny Damon would be a better fit. Though, it must be said that Lofton's speed and defense will definitely benefit the Dodger organization. Despite being 38-years-old, it appears from his performance last year that he still has a few good years left in him. Now, with arguably the best infield in the N.L., the Dodgers should contend for the N.L. West pennant as long as Gagne stays healthy.

Report: Lofton to join the Dodgers
Industry sources told the Arizona Republic that Kenny Lofton has agreed in principle to a deal with the Dodgers.
But he never played for the Red Sox. Lofton will probably be the Dodgers' center fielder against right-handers, pushing J.D. Drew back to right field. As things stand now, Jason Repko and later a healthy Jayson Werth would platoon with him. However, a Reggie Sanders signing could make Jose Cruz Jr. the center fielder against left-handers. Lofton's signing also figures to push Bill Mueller down to the sixth or seventh spot in the order.

The Dodgers are expected to sign Lofton to a one-year deal on Tues. 12/20 for $3.85 million.

A few weeks ago, I would have agreed with you. Now, I'm not so sure.

1B: Garciaparra vs. Delgado: Sure Delgado wins... but Garciaparra is not chopped liver

2B: Jeff Kent vs. Kaz Matsui: the disparity between Kent and Matsui is a bit high

SS: Rafael Furcal vs. Reyes: only category that Reyes trumps Furcal is in SBs... and Furcal is no slouch in that dept. Dodgers even win this category defensively.

3B: Bill Mueller vs. David Wright: Wright by a landslide, but probably balances out the disparity between Kent and Matsui.

If the Mets can improve at 2B, I would agree with you. Absent this, the infields are a wash, in my opinion.

Excellent analysis!!! As far as the starters go, I totally agree that it's a dead heat between the Mets and Dodgers. However, when you consider the entire package and look at the infield reserves, it's fair to say that the Dodgers have a better infield as it stands, IMHO. L.A. has pretty competent players, such as Olmedo Saenz and Hee Seop Choi coming off the bench. Of course, you can't forget Cesar Izturis, who is one of the best defensive specialists in the league. Once he's off the disabled list, there will be no question as to who has the better infield. I'll put those Dodger reserves against senior citizen, Julio Franco, Jeff Keppinger, Chris Woodward, and even Jose Valentin any day of the week.

I think that Izturis is going to be expendable. The Dodgers will shop him... I just hope that they can get something good for him after the serious injury.

...add LoDuca to the equation and it's a slamdunk for the Mets.

I don't agree. Navarro has the potential to be the exact same player.

Here are their stats:

Navarro --

176 AB, .273, .354, 21 R, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 21 K

Loduca --

445 AB, .283, .334, 45 R, 6 HR, 57 RBI, 31 K, 4 SB, 3 CS

Navarro didn't try to steal a base... with the 3 CS out of 7, Loduca probably shouldn't have tried.

Give Navarro the same number of at-bats with the new lineup, and I'm betting that Navarro will get the edge.

Remember: Loduca had guys to bring home. Navarro was playing with a bunch of AAA'ers. Not any longer...

LoDuca is a fine player, no doubt about it, but Dioner Navarro is a player who I believe will soon become a household name. He's considered the best catching prospect to come in the league in recent years and is often compared to Ivan Rodriguez. In fact, Navarro's nickname is "Little Pudgito". As I've said, you have to look at the entire infield, including the reserves. As it stands right now, the Dodgers have a slight advantage over the Mets in that department.
