Lee is in the last year of a three year contract. Lee's agent and the Cubs brass has promised to talk during Spring Training.

This has interesting fantasy implications.

If Lee and the Cubs cannot agree, this means Lee has all of the incentive to match, if not better, his statistics from last year to get the big bucks.

Says Lee:

Lee said he wouldn't necessarily be seeking the biggest contract.

"If it's a deal I feel is fair for me, I would sign it. It's still a business. I always look at it as if there is a deal that makes me happy now, why not sign it? I don't think $2-3 million a year more is going to change my life," he said.

Last year, Lee had a monster year. He hit .300 (.335) for the first time in his career, his OBP was over .400 (.418) for the first time in his career, and his SLG was over .600 (.662) for the first time in his career. If I'm the Cubbies, I make him do it again before I shell out the really big bucks.

He also had an OPS of 1.000 or more in EACH month of the season, so he never had a let down. It would probably be wise for the Cubs to sign him to a four-five year contract now, as if they wait til the end of this season, his market price just might get a little higher.

I think he is good for near 2005 numbers for the next 3-4 years (2005 was probably his career best year because of the BA and OBP numbers, which I do not think he will repeat).

I think he will do it again, but I think he'll be a little more motivated to do it again with a big payday in the balance. After A-rod and Pujols, he's right there for the next pick. After he went from Florida to Wrigley, I thought he'd have a great year, but it took him two years.
