Happy Birthday Major League Baseball. I heard this on Pete Van Weirens Diamond notes tonight that the first organized professional game was played on this date, May 4th in 1871. Some of the rules of that first game were a little strange. Home plate had to be made from wrought iron and a batter walked on a three ball count.
