Game 20: Detroit Tigers 0 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 3
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Kenny Rogers pitched well for Detroit once again. In the first inning Figgins walked and moved around to third on two ground outs. Rogers got Vlad to fly out to center to end the inning. The Angels got on the board first in the bottom of the second. Tim Salmon hit his sixth career home run off Rogers to left field leading off the inning. A double play got Rogers out of trouble in the third after he walked Figgins for the second time.

Again in the fourth Rogers was masterful after getting into trouble. Garrett Anderson led off with a double, but did not get any further. Rogers got Vlad, Salmon and...

Game 19: Detroit Tigers 6 Seattle Mariners 4
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Justin Verlander is going to be a great major league pitcher. This was the first time I was able to watch him on television and his stuff is amazing. One of his pitches was clocked at 101 mph on the gun and he throws so effortlessly. The final score of this game is not indicative of the great performance turned in by Verlander against fellow young phenom Felix Hernandez. Verlander only allowed one run in seven innings of work to earn his second victory of the season. He didn’t allow a run until the fifth, which extended the Tigers’ starters scoreless streak to 23 innings.

Unlike the previous game the Tigers’ offense took advantage...

Game 18: Detroit Tigers 2 Seattle Mariners 0
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Okay…so I might have been a little harsh after Robertson’s last outing in suggesting the Tigers might need to consider replacing him in the rotation because he had been struggling. It also looks like he added some velocity to his fastball following that horrible start against Cleveland. This performance was the type of comeback Tigers’ fans wanted to see from him. Nate threw a gem of a game Saturday evening at Safeco to shut out the Mariners over 7 innings. He only allowed two infield base hits and dominated the Seattle hitters. Detroit needed the great effort because once again the offense failed to capitalize on numerous opportunities and only put up two runs. The...

Game 17: Detroit Tigers 2 Seattle Mariners 1
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Another great starting pitching performance turned in by Mike Maroth. He has now gone 17.1 innings without allowing a run. The last run he allowed was in the first inning of his first outing of the season. Maroth held Seattle off the board even without complete command of his pitches. He struggled at times with his control, but pitched out of trouble on every occasion. This game was a pitching battle between Maroth and Washburn who also pitched well in the loss.

After six scoreless innings, Maroth gave way to Zumaya who blazed his fastball past the Mariners’ hitters for two shut out innings with four strikeouts. Todd Jones saw his first action of the year...

Game 16: Detroit Tigers 4 Oakland Athletics 3
(By: The Olde English Ds)

What a huge victory for the Tigers early in the season. Detroit picked a great time for their first come-from-behind victory of the year. The rubber-match of the series with the A’s proved to be a difficult win for the Tigers, but they held on to improve to 9-7 on the young season. It looked like Detroit was headed back to .500 until the ninth inning when some great ABs helped them over come a 2 run deficit. The A’s were hurt by the fact closer Huston Street had a sore pectoral muscle and Justin Duchscherer took the mound to close out the game.

Bonderman got off to a rough start in this game. He struggled mightily...

Game 15: Detroit Tigers 11 Oakland Athletics 4
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Game 2 of the series provides a great pitching match-up on paper between Kenny Rogers and Joe Blanton. However, the Tigers roughed up Blanton something fierce and he was not able to get out of the fifth after allowing 8 runs. Rogers on the other hand was lights out. He gave up a no doubt home run to Frank Thomas in the bottom of the second, but not much else until the 8th where he allowed another run and left one runner on.

Chris Spurling came in and struggled mightily. He was greeted with a home run off the bat of Mark Ellis to charge another run to Rogers. This cut the lead from 10-1...

Game 14: Detroit Tigers 3 Oakland Athletics 4
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Curtis Granderson started the Tigers offense on the right note Tuesday night leading off the game with a triple and coming home on Polanco’s RBI single. Then surprisingly Esteban Loaiza settled down not allowing Detroit to score any more runs through five.

Verlander making his third start of the year surrendered a walk to Bradley before Nick Swisher homered to give the A’s a 2-1 lead. The Tigers defense fell apart in the bottom of the fourth giving an unearned run to Oakland on a failed double play. Detroit should have been out of the inning without any damage, but the second error of the game charged to Carlos Guillen proved costly. The defense has been suspect the...

Game 13: Detroit Tigers 2 Cleveland Indians 10
(By: The Olde English Ds)

What an absolute stinker!!! The Tigers must not have got the memo. This was the first game I was able to attend this season and on my birthday no less. My Tigers did not come through for me. I had hopes of a victory and a first place tie making a great present. Instead I got a well deserved Jim Leyland tirade following the game.

Nate Robertson was horrible to put it bluntly. He easily cruised through the first before giving up an unearned run in the 2nd following a Brandon Inge error. However, he was only able to get one out in the 3rd before getting pulled after allowing 6 more runs. ...

Game 12: Detroit Tigers 1 Cleveland Indians 0
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Thank you for the great pitching performance Mike Maroth. For the second straight game the Tigers’ offense provided little, but Maroth was able to make a home run for Chris Shelton stand as the difference in the game. Maroth has this start pushed back three days because of a sore elbow and made it worth Detroit’s wait. He pitched 7 shut-out innings before the bullpen duo of Zumaya and Rodney completely shut the door on the Tribe. This game was a pitcher’s dual in the greatest sense of the term. Cliff Lee pitched valiantly for Cleveland only giving up a home run to Shelton his 8th of the season. The Tigers are fortunate to pull...

Game 11: Detroit Tigers 2 Cleveland Indians 7
(By: The Olde English Ds)

The pitching match-up heading into the game looked promising for the Tigers. Jeremy Bonderman was scheduled to pitch against a prospect for the making his first major league appearance. The game ended up being anything other than promising for the Tigers. They made Fausto Carmona look like a seasoned veteran and Bonderman looked like he was taking the major league mound for the first time in an easy 7-2 Indians victory.

Detroits’ offense was missing a few key components, but that provides no excuse for the poor effort and lack of quality at bats. Dmitri Young tore his hamstring placing him on the 15 day DL. Alexis Gomez got the call up from Toledo to replace Young,...

Game 10: Detroit Tigers 5 Cleveland Indians 1
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Kenny Rogers did what a good 1st starter should do when he ended the Tigers 4 game losing streak. Rogers (2-1, 3.26) was very sharp, especially with men on base, keeping the Indians hitters off balance. A promising stat for Tigers’ fans is Roger’s record against the AL Central last season was dominant. Thus far he has started well against the Royals and Indians. Rogers gave the bullpen a rest after the crazy game yesterday going eight innings before giving way to Fernando Rodney who got the last three outs.

The biggest difference between this game and the previous four during the losing streak was the solid starting pitching. Holding the high potent Indians offense...

Game 9: Detroit Tigers 9 Chicago White Sox13
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Justin Verlander’s second start did not start as well as his first outing went. After retiring the lead-off batter he surrendered back-to-back home runs to Iguchi and Thome. He set down Konerko and Dye to avoid further trouble.

In the bottom of the first the Tigers’ played some small ball. Granderson began with a single off the glove of Garland the pitcher. He went to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a ground out to second by Polanco. Pudge drove Granderson in with a ground out to second with the infield back. Magglio followed with a walk and Dmitri Young singled to left. However, they were stranded when Shelton struck out.

The...

Game 8: Detroit Tigers 3 Chicago White Sox 4
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Scott Podsednik broke out of his slump with a double to lead-off the game. Nate Robertson got Iguchi to hit a grounder to third and Podsednik was easily thrown out at third. Nate then got the tough power bats of Thome and Konerko to fly out to Granderson in center. The 2nd went much easier for Robertson as he struck out the first two batters in a 1-2-3 inning. The third went just as well for Nate as he struck out one and retired nine in a row.

Nate Robertson statistically struggles on the second time around the order. Unfortunately this trend continued in the top of the fourth as Thome crushed a 3-1 pitch deep...

Game 7: Detroit Tigers 3 Chicago White Sox 5
(By: The Olde English Ds)

The home opener is always special in Detroit, especially against the World Series champions and coming home with a 5-1 record. Unfortunately for Tigers’ fans the White Sox played like World Champs and ruined the Detroit party. The Sox blasted 3 HRs to the Tigers one for the 5-3 victory. For the first time all year the Tigers dropped to second place in the Central at 5-2 behind Cleveland.

Freddie Garcia pitched well for the White Sox following a poor first outing. Craig Monroe hit a homer in the 2nd after Guillen drew a walk to give Detroit an early lead. However, the Tigers offense only generated one more run against Garcia in the 6th on a...

Game 6: Detroit Tigers 3 Texas Rangers 5
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Well I guess you can’t win them all. The Tigers will not be the first team to go 162-0 in a season. I’m a little surprised, but we move forward from here. ;) The Tigers fell into a first place tie in the AL Central with the tough Cleveland Indians at 5-1.

The Detroit offense and Chris Shelton finally hit a rut in the Texas heat. They got to Vicente Padilla for three runs early, but he settled them down from there. The Tigers were not able to get anything done in the final 3 innings against the Rangers bullpen.

Shelton went 0-4 with 3 Ks lowering his average to .583, but that won’t stop him...

Game 5: Detroit Tigers 7 Texas Rangers 0
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Strike up the band. The Justin Verlander era is officially under way in the D. The Tigers extended their winning streak to 5 games. Each of the Tigers starters begin the season with a victory. This game was frustrating for local fans as the game was blacked out and I had to listen to Verlander’s dominance. I wanted to watch his first start, but what can you do.

Verlander was easily the story of the game. He went 7 full innings and did not surrender a run. Verlander showed good control, only walking two and his stuff was nasty. He struck out 7 and pitched calmly out of pressure situations. These...

Game 4: Detroit Tigers 5 Texas Rangers 2
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Rack another victory up for the Tigers. Detroit is now the only undefeated team in the American League. Not quite what I expected, but am thrilled with the development. Friday night did not bring the offensive explosion from the Tigers, but they continued to hit with power, drive in timely runs and take advantage of Texas mistakes. Once again the starting pitching proved to be solid and the bullpen maintained the lead.

Chris Shelton went yard again for his 5th of the season. The Tigers shattered the record for the most home runs in four games. The previous record was 13 by the 1998 Seattle Mariners. Detroit belted 16 HRs in the first...

Game 3: Detroit Tigers 10 Texas Rangers 6
(By: The Olde English Ds)

:)

A change of scenery did not change the outcome for the Detroit Tigers. For the second straight day the Tigers used the formula of an offensive explosion and solid starting pitching to improve to 3-0 on the year. Detroit set a record slamming 7 HRs against Texas, which is the most they have ever allowed. They also tied a record going yard 6 times on the starter R.A. Dickey. The poor guy is trying to develop a knuckleball at the major league level. Needless to say it may need some work.

There were a number of positive signs for the Tigers from their pitching staff. Nate Robertson was solid going 5.1 innings giving up 3 runs...

Game 2: Detroit Tigers 14 Kansas City Royals 3
(By: The Olde English Ds)

:)

Game 2 proved to be even better than opening day for the Tigers. They got off to a fantastic start in the top of the first. After going 0-5 on opening day, Granderson nearly led off the game with a home run. The ball bounced off the top of the fence in right and he settled for a double. Polanco followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Pudge followed with a double scoring Granderson and moving Polanco to 3rd. Magglio drove in Polanco with a sac fly and Pudge scored on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the inning Jeremy Bonderman showed he was ready to step his game to this season....

Game 1: Detroit Tigers 3 Kansas City Royals 1 :)
(By: The Olde English Ds)

A great start to the Jim Leyland era in Detroit. Positive signs abound for the Tigers on this sunny day in Kansas City. The Royals always seem to give the Detroit team fits and it was nice to see the Tigers win a game they should against a lesser opponent. The game was well played and hopefully foreshadowing of things to come.

Kenny Rogers was terrific. He threw a very high percentage of first pitch strikes and kept the KC hitters off balance with his off-speed pitches. Rogers work the corners well without giving into the Royals hitters. He went 6 strong for the win without giving up a walk and only allowing a lone two...

Outfielders
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Ahhh, finally I have reached the end of the line with the pitchers and positional players for the Tigers. The bench analysis, coaching breakdown and farm report will be coming soon, but I won’t get them out prior to opening day. I didn’t think this would be a problem to get everything done and analyzed before the season started, but after I got going I realized I was on page 13 of a single spaced Word document and putting way too much time into this. There is some data to quantify my true BGeek status. My hope is to keep a game-to-game analysis of my beloved Detroit baseball club. We’ll have to see how that goes...

Middle Infielders
(By: The Olde English Ds)

The Detroit Tigers’ middle infielders should be the strength of the team. Of course, this is dependent mainly on their ability to remain healthy throughout the season. Health is the concern for Carlos Guillen, who was limited to 87 games last season due to complications and chronic pain following knee surgery. 2006 represents his second year following a torn ACL, which frequently is the time table for such an injury to completely heal. A return to health for Guillen will do wonders for the Tigers’ everyday line-up and he will likely return to the form this year that made him an All Star in 2004. Guillen is a solid defensive SS as he had a .978...

Corner Infielders
(By: The Olde English Ds)

Hello BGeeks,

The next positional analysis for the Tigers is the corner infielders. Typically with the 1B and 3B positions teams are looking for guys with some pop in their bat and tend to worry less about the defense. For the Tigers they meet this criterion at first, but not at third.

In one of the better moves of the last decade the Tigers obtained what may turn out to be their first baseman for the next 10 years. They got Chris Shelton in the rule 5 draft from the Pirates, who really dropped the ball on this one. Shelton can flat out rake. He started out as a catcher and made the move to first last season....
