I have joined the Regulars League at askrotoman.com (I advertised this site and PlayerTrack in his magazine this year -- the one with the powder blue cover and Pujols on the cover).

Serpentine. I just learned that I will be picking 13th. That will REALLY put me to the test.

This draft is this weekend, so I will post up my results to get your opinions.

I am going to be live blogging my first draft of the roto season tomorrow (5:30pm PST). I am expecting this to be an example of why playing in a 20 team league is a complete crap shoot.

I pick 13th, so my first pick is #13, my second pick is #27, and my third pick is #40. Not sure how anyone can make a half way decent team in this spot.

I will try.

I am thinking that I am going to have to rely on gambles, though. So, I will either be the best team, or the worst team. No in between.

Pitching is not being taken in the second round. With the 27th pick, I have to take Roy Oswalt. Peavy was just taken.

Draft is slowing a bit, but still going fast, considering most drafts. We only get one catcher, so with my third pick, I am eyeing catcher because of position scarcity.

Victor Matinez is the only guy taken so far. Holding my breath a certain Twins catcher is available with #40.

Rolen went right after I mentioned him... then my eyes were set on Ensberg... two picks befor eme, he was snagged.

Then, there was 3rd ranked PlayerTrack 3B Chipper Jones sitting there. I took him.

There is somewhat of a glitch, I guess, with Yahoo. I picked up Lopez as a SS... it records him as a 2B.

I just picked up Mark Loretta for 2B. He becomes my UTIL pick.

Johnny Gomes is still out there. 12 picks to go. I desperately need a good starter and a closer. My next two picks after Gomez (hoping I get Gomez next) must be pitchers.

Then, I need to look for power at 1B, hopefully (Fielder?).

This guy Yerevan Yak is my nemesis. He took Ensberg two picks before me and he just stole Gomes, forcing me to gamble with my next pick.

I need good power. My home town guy who had an incredible 2004 is just sitting there. Sure, he is a risk. Sure, this pick will make me a goat OR a hero... but only one or the other.

With my 7th pick: J.D. Drew

I am at an interesting impasse here. Tom Gordeon is out there. Five picks to go. My sleeper Mike Gonzalez is still out there (Jenks and all other top tier closers gone).

If I still have a choice, it will be Mike Gonzalez.

Gordon went two picks before me. The choice was made easier.

8th round: Mike Gonzalez

Summary so far:

1. Abreu
2. Oswalt
3. Mauer
4. Felipe Lopez
5. Chipper
6. Loretta
7. Drew
8. Gonzalez

Need a starter next. Garland and Doug Davis still out there. I am not big fans of either, but they did both have nice numbers.

I'm going to try and get Oliver Perez later in the draft. I have a feeling about him.

Considering the circumstances (drafting 13th), I am not REALLY happy with my team, but it'll do. I definitely need strikeouts. I am very tempted to take Scott Shields with my next pick, if I can.

Bottom line: I need a power hitting 1B. I need to put my "money" where my mouth is right here. Mike Jacobs is available. I was thinking about Dan Johnson or Adam Laroche (both still out there).

I have to go with Jacobs, if I am to show faith in my PlayerTrack system.

Garland is a terrific pickup. Oliver Perez could be a good sleeper pick later on if he's available. Scot Shields is a good middle reliever to have and he usually pitches a lot of extra innings. Akinori Otsuka is the same way, but I'm not sure if he'll adapt well to pitching for the Rangers.

I have a gap in my SS spot, now available. I don't need a SS (Lopez), but I need to fill the spot. JJ Hardy is out there. Lots of folks high on him.

If I can get a hot start from him, maybe a trade for a closer? I do need a closer now because there are very few left (Borowski is sitting there).

I am going for Hardy with my next pick.

I thought Jason Lane was available. No dice.

The highest ranked OF in HR and RBI still available on PlayerTrack was #30...

Jay Payton. 18 HRs in 408 ABs. But, he could kill my average. And, he may not play much.

I am in gambling mode now... need pitching. More money where my mouth is. I like Texas. I think Adam Eaton is going to be good, which is hard to say when his ERA was pretty lousy in San Diego.

Strikeouts are good if I can get a whole year from him.

This is his walk year, so he will want to do well.

Pickings are very slim now.

Just noticed Heilman was available... I missed him.

I put him on the top of my list for next pick. Bam, he's taken.

Last two rounds:

Adam Eaton
Ryan Church (him or Nook Logan, but I don't know if Nook will geta starting job)

Damnit! Jason Marquis was out there and I had one pick to go... free agent year for him. The guy just before me takes him. This isn't my night.

I go with Jarrod Washburn. On a mission, I hope... and in a pitcher's park (well, ask Adrian Beltre!)

Carl Everett is still out there. I need some pop... I also need SBs, and I can't really find it with him. I'm gonna go with the potential power (3 picks to go)... hope I get him.

Otherwise, I'll take a chance on Lawton.

Yikes. I took Everett, and I missed Frank Thomas on the list. Big error there.

Now, I only have ONE real save guy. I have to take a chance with my last pick on backup closers Fernando Rodney or Brazaban. I'm going to take a guess that Gagne is going to be slow to start, notwithstanding recent reports.

Gagne's surgery, after all, was less than a year ago.

I end the draft with Brazoban.

I am not too happy with this team, but I wasn't happy drafting 13th. I have a LOT of gaps. Without one really stellar SB guy, I'm middle of the pack there at best.

Lots of gambles.

Crain was, unfortunately, taken by the time I had a chance. Bottom line is that I already had too many middle relief guys. I have the best, arguably, in Shields and Duchscherer, but this isn't a HOLDS league.

Yak is the same guy who stole Heilman from me. I will definitely refer back to this thread come September, and if this guy wins the whole thing, I know that I was close... just bad draft position.

Hard to be in a 20 team draft. Picks get slim about half way through I would imagine. I don't think you did all that bad. Oswalt & Garland as your top 2 SP's is pretty solid given the circumstances. It could sure as hell be a lot worse. Some young unproven talent in the infield, but talented. Outfield is not that bad. I think Carl Everett can still hit. Obviously, Abreu appears to be your best hitter.

That's not a bad team, Reedster, considering you picked 13th and it's such an early draft. You've got a lot of talent. Picking 13th is tough. A lot of guys zip off the board before you, and then you've still got to wait awhile before it gets back to you. But Abrue and Oswalt are pretty good picks.

Listening to the podcast, and watching your draft, where did Felix Hernandez get drafted, was the phenom taken early in your draft as well. I think the hype on him is a little overrated at this point.
